When we buy a computer we do not normally think about how we are going to take care of it. We are offered virus protection and that’s about it. Unfortunately we need to do more to help protect ourselves.
Before we go into what to do and use we must strongly advise that you back-up your computer/laptop before you do anything and continue to do it on a regular basis. If you do not back-up your computer there is always a chance you will lose important documents, pictures or music files.
We have a few things we can recommend that we use regularly.
We advise you use the ‘CCleaner’ Optimization and Cleaning tool. This cleans all areas of your PC and helps protect your privacy online and makes your computer faster and more secure. This should be done on a monthly basis. You can find the link here.
You should do a malware bytes scan every week if you are a heavy internet user. Malware is normally downloaded onto a user’s computer/laptop without their knowledge. It is malicious software that is used or programmed to disrupt your computers operation, collect sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems. You can find the link here.
To keep your browser safe we recommend using Firefox and to run these add-ons.
WOT is there to help you protect yourself from online threats that anti-virus can’t spot. It is a helpful guide to show you which sites are safe to use. You can find the link here.
APB is great for blocking banners, pop-ups and video ads – even on Facebook and YouTube. You can find the link here.
Protecting your PC is very important and using an antivirus is one of the best ways to protect yourself. For the home user we recommend using Norton Internet security, for business we recommend Symantec Endpoint Protection. If you would like something that will handle backups, cleaning your pc etc, we recommend Norton 360. If you are looking for a free anti-virus we recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials.
Keeping your PC clean will increase your computer or laptops shelf life, making sure it does not have unwanted viruses or files will mean it is not working so hard. We also recommend that you keep your software up to date, not just your antivirus and other protection software but also your windows updates.
Again please make sure you do a back-up on a regular basis. You do not want to lose those important files or pictures!
