The most common question we are asked is ‘How can I speed up my computer/laptop? It is running so slow!’ There are many different reasons a computer or laptop could be running slow, some are quite complicated and would need you to seek help from your local computer support company and some just take a regular ‘clean out’.
We are going to give you a few pointers to help with the most common reasons your computer/laptop could be running slow. Even if your computer is not currently slow you should probably still give it a regular ‘clean out’.
Most people without realising clog up their laptop or computer with junk from the internet or download a programme to ‘Clean Up’ their files. Please do not install a tool that says it will clean out your files and make your computer run faster, it will probably install a tool bar and advertising which will make you run even slower!
So there are many things you can do to increase your running speed and help to clear out your unwanted files and programmes.
Firstly you should ask yourself when the last time you shut your computer/laptop down completely. We are all guilty of just closing the lid of our laptop and not shutting down properly, this can make your laptop sluggish. It would be like you going to bed and just dozing, not actually going to sleep, we all need a good sleep.
So now you have closed your laptop/computer down properly have you Defragment your hard driveDefragment your hard drivedefragmented your computer/laptop recently (ever)? Defragmenting rearranges data so your hard disk works more efficiently, it normally runs to a timetable but you can manually do a defrag. Instructions are here if you need help.
You can next clean up your hard-drive. We all have pointless files on our hard drives, freeing up space can help your computer/laptop run faster. A clean up removes files that are no longer needed, empties your recycle bin and removes temporary files. Instructions can be found here.
Many new computers and laptops come pre-installed with programmes and trials of programmes that you will never use. Why not delete these unwanted programmes and gain more memory, disk space, and processing power.memory, disk space and power. You can find out how to do that here.
If your laptop or computer takes ages to start up you can limit the amount of programmes that load when you start up and open them up later when you need them. Here are the instructions on how to do this.
Having lots of emails open, browsers open and chatting on instant messenger will make your computer/laptop run terribly! We are all guilty of this! Take a look at what you need open now and make a note of those you can look at later.
Another thing to do is to check for viruses and spyware. If you have pop-ups or you are running much slower than normal this could be a sign that your computer/laptop has an infection or spyware. While we generally know what an infection is not everyone knows what spyware is. Spyware is a programme that watches your activity on the internet. It is normally installed without knowledge and you can check for spyware with Windows Defender. Instruction can be found here. Viruses can be prevented by having antivirus software and keeping it up to date. There is a slight chance even with antivirus software that you can have an infection. More information can be found here.
There are a lot of things you can do to help as you can see. We will follow this blog up soon with our recommendations on antivirus software and other products we recommend to help your computer/laptop run smoother.
